Welcome to Azami, Lady of Scrolls commander article!
Azami is a very powerful tribal commander that can provide us card advantage for each wizard that we tap, her deck is directed for a combo/control strategy. The main strategy of the deck is to build our game through the access of a couple of mana ramp artifacts in order to play Azami as fast as possible, keeping some counters for protection. After we get Azami on the battlefield we can start to draw a lot of extra cards until we find a combo that can win the game.

The Creatures
Azami has a tribal theme so most of the creatures are wizards. Let´s start with the tribal creatures that can be tapped to draw with Azami´s ability. Patron Wizard is probably one of the best wizards, his function is to counter or at least add a “force Spike” tax for each wizard that we tap. Glen Elendra Archmage is an amazing wizard due to the fact that it isn´t just one more counterspell but it´s 2 more counterspells. Ertai, Wizard Adept, as the same way as Glen, is a wizard that can do a counterspell for an activation cost. Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir is a great when we want to go for a combo, he can shut down the opponents´ answers. Memnarch is essentially a finisher to steal everything when we have infinite colored mana but if we don´t go infinite but if we have a lot of mana this creature can become very annoying for the opponents. Magus of the Future can provide us a lot card advantage. This wizard allow us to play cards for the top of our library which can become ridiculous when we have large amounts of mana. When we have on the top a card that we can´t play because we don´t have a target for it or if we get the second land of the turn we can tap a wizard to draw that card, cleaning the top an allowing us to check the next card. Trinket Mage is a commander staple that allow us to search for a 1 mana or less artifact, being useful to search for a ramp artifact like Sol Ring to speed our game at the beginning. Lighthouse Chronologist doesn’t do anything until his level 7+, but when it does we can get an extra turn after every other player´s turn, giving us a lot of advantage. Snapcaster Mage and Archaeomancer are two very important wizards that can let us to reuse an instant or sorcery spell on our graveyard. Sower of Temptation can steal a creature from an opponent. Sower is less efficient than Gilded Drake, however her Wizard type makes her better than Gilded Drake on this deck. Arcanis the Omnipotent is the only wizard that can give us draws without Azami, he works very well with some untap effects like Minamo, School at Water´s Edge. Laboratory Maniac is a combo piece that will be explained later. We only have 3 nonwizards on this deck. Consecrated Sphinx is another card advantage creature, this creature isn´t a wizard but it´s too broken to be excluded from our decklist. Phyrexian Metamorph can clone an artifact or a creature being a very versatile card. The last creature is Palinchron which is a combo piece, we use it to generate infinite colored mana with Extraplanar Lens, High Tide or Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx when we have enought devotion.
The Artifacts
As we are playing with a mono blue deck we need to appeal to artifact acceleration. This ramp artifacts are very important to build our game and cast our wizards sooner in order to star to draw a lot of cards and control the game. Extraplanar Lens are an excellent card to double the mana of a mono-colored deck and but it´s particularly good when we use it together with untap effects like Teferi, Temporal Archmage or Turnabout. As we said previously, Extraplanar Lens are also a combo piece with Palinchron to generate infinite colored mana. This card is the reason why we are playing with Snow-Covered Islands, when we imprint one of this lands only the players with basic islands with the same name can enjoy this card. While we are playing with a mono blue deck we have few ways to search for nonsorcery and noninstant cards, to bridge this gap we have Planar Portal that can be also a lock with Beacon of Tomorrows, allowing us to do infinite extra turns.
Rings of Brighthearth is a very versatile card, it can be useful to copy our planeswalker abilities, to do 2 tutors with Planar Portal, to draw 6 cards with Arcanis the Omnipotent or to copy some more activated abilities. Rings of Brighthearth is also a piece of a very easy combo with only one more artifact, the Basalt Monolith. When we tap Basalt Monolith to produce 3 mana we can use that mana to stack its untap ability and with 2 more mana we can copy it with Rings of Brighthearth, this two effects will resolve at different times so we can respond to the second untap producing 3, and then we can repeat this process as many times as we want flouting one extra mana on each step.
Crystal Shard is an artifact that allow us to enjoy more than one time our creature triggers, this card is awesome with Venser, Shaper Savant and Snapcaster Mage. When we have Crystal Shard together with Archaeomancer and an extra turn like Time Warp and Temporal Manipulation we can do extra turns as many times as we want until we find a win condition. Vedalken Shackles is an awesome card for a mono blue deck, allowing us to steal creatures and sometimes it can help us to stop some combos.
The Instant and Sorceries
We are playing with a mono blue control deck, so obviously we need a couple of counters and bounce spells, like Cyclonic Rift, to stop our opponents from winning the game while we are building our game. Capsize can be a spell that never ends when we use it for its buyback cost. Capsize can be a finisher when we have infinite colored mana. While we generate big amounts of mana with the access of ramp artifacts, there is nothing more efficient to draw than Stroke of Genius and Blue Sun´s Zenith. These cards can be a win condition when we have infinite mana to induce one of the opponents to draw more than the number of cards on his deck or to draw our whole deck and then win with Laboratory Maniac or by keep doing Beacon of Tomorrows to keep us alive until we win by aggro or with Blue Sun´s Zenith and Stroke of Genius inducing the other players to draw. Turnabout is a very versatile card that most of the times is used to draw more cards by untaping our wizards or to generate more mana by untaping our artifacts or lands. High Tide is an awesome card to ramp but it is essentially a combo card together with Palinchron. Muddle the Mixture is a counterspell for instants or sorceries but it also can be a tutor when it´s used for its transmute ability. We can search for cards like Power Artifact, Grim Monolith or Snapcaster Mage with Muddle the Mixture. Bribery is a very good thievery card, we can search for an opponent´s broken creature, paying only 5 mana, and put it on our side. Instant and Sorceries are very important for the deck so we need to have some ways to find these spells, for that reason we are using the best tutors for instant and sorceries like Personal Tutor, Mystical Tutor and Merchant Scroll. Azami is a commander that give us card advantage by tapping a wizard and there is nothing that fits better than extra turns, this cards can give us a lot of advantage. We also have a couple infinite extra turns combos that were described before.
The Other Stuff
Future Sight is an enchantment that can provide us a lot card advantage. As we said for Magus of the future this enchantment allows us to play cards for the top of our library which can become ridiculous when we have large amounts of mana. Power Artifact is a combo piece with Basalt Monolith or Grim Monolith, these cards together can generate infinite colorless mana.
Mind over Matter is a combo card with Azami, with these two we can filter cards until we find what we need to win the game.
We are using 3 planeswalker: Jace, The Mind Sculptor which is a very versatile planeswalker that doesn´t need many explanations; Tezzeret the Seeker that is a way to generate big amounts of mana and it´s also a tutor for artifacts; at last Teferi, Temporal Archmage that can work as the same way as Tezzeret and as card advantage at the same time.
The Lands
Riptide Laboratory is a land that has many interactions, we can use it to protect our wizards or to return some wizard with an enter the battlefield trigger to our hand like Venser, Shaper Savant or Snapcaster Mage. We can do infinite turns with this land, Archaeomancer and Time Warp or Temporal Manipulation. Minamo, School at Water´s Edge is another land that seems to be made for this deck, it works very well with Azami´s ability giving us another draw and it can be broken together with Arcanis the Omnipotent. Most of the wizards and blue enchantments require a lot of blue specific mana so we can get a lot of devotion with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx giving us big amounts of mana. We can generate infinite mana with Palinchron and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx if we have enought devotion. In spite of our counterspells to ensure that our wizards can enter the battlefield, Cavern of Souls is always a good option for a tribal deck. We use a big amount of artifacts on this deck and some of them are combo pieces so we need to have Academy Ruins. Sometimes we get a huge hand and there is nothing better than Reliquary Tower to ensure that we don´t have to discard. At last, Tolaria West works like a tutor for other utilitary lands and it can also search for Pact of Negation and artifacts like Mana Crypt and the 2 moxes.
